PENETRATION GRADE BITUMEN

Penetration Grade Bitumen can be identified as the primary standard bitumen usually used as Paving Grade Bitumen essential for road construction and for the production of asphalt pavements with superior properties. This kind of Bitumen will come out as final residue from crude oil produced in some countries which naturally has the oil resource. Penetration grade bitumen is the primary bitumen material imported to Sri Lanka in thickest form packed in black steel drums. We import high quality penetration grade bitumen from trusted International suppliers and supply locally in heated bulk and drums to our customers.

BITUMEN 60/70 & 80/100

There are two different types of penetration grade bitumen such are Bitumen 60/70 & Bitumen 80/100. There are some main differences between these two can be identified as penetration range, thickness and also the time takes for the heating. Bitumen 60/70 seems to more thick in appearance and takes more time when converting to liquid form while Bitumen 80/100 seems to be lighter and takes comparatively less time than 60/70 when converting to liquid form.

Also the major difference is Bitumen 60/70’s penetration lies between 60 -70 range where Bitumen 80/100’s penetration lies between 80-100 range under recommended testing conditions. Penetration grade bitumen usually used as a Paving Grade Bitumen suitable for road construction and for the production of asphalt pavements with superior properties also mainly used in the spraying and chip applications.

BITUMEN EMULSION

Bitumen Emulsion is designed for use as a prime Coat in Road construction and made up of three basic ingredients which include Bitumen, an emulsifying agent and water. Cationic Emulsions which have positively charged ions may be used at ambient temperatures with aggregates, which do not have to be completely dry. Emulsions are less hazardous to use and can be applied in the wider range of conditions and used for many applications including road surfacing.

We produce quality Bitumen Emulsion locally by using heated bitumen and recommended quality emulsifiers imported from best suppliers mixed in water and blended with the best emulsion plant. Then supplied to our customers in bulk and drums after the proper quality tests. There are three varieties in Bitumen Emulsion we produce here such are Bitumen Emulsion CSS1, CRS1 and CRS2.

CATIONIC SLOW SETTING (CSS1)

Bitumen Emulsion CSS1 contains 57% Bitumen and looks like light brown colour in appearance used for a variety of purposes such like Fog Sealing, Mist Spraying, Concrete Curing, Grouting, Sealing, Patching, Formation and Sub-base and Surface Dressing.

This kind of slow setting emulsions are the most stable of emulsions, and generally can be diluted with water and mixed with mineral fillers and aggregates for all uses, the air and pavement temperatures at construction should be sufficiently high to allow the emulsion to fully cure. Asphalt binders should be applied during rain or imminent threat of rain.

CATIONIC RAPID SETTING (CRS1)

Bitumen Emulsion CRS1 contains 60% Bitumen and seems to be darker in colour and thicker than CSS1 is commonly used for Tack- Coating. This is applied to an underlying surface to aid with the adhesion of the following asphalt layer. Bitumen Emulsion CRS1 is also used for Fog Sealing, Mist Spraying, Concrete Curing, Grouting, Sealing, Patching, Formation and Sub- base and Surface Dressing.

CATIONIC RAPID SETTING (CRS2)

Bitumen Emulsion CRS2 seems to be almost similar like Bitumen Emulsion CRS1 blended using same emulsifiers other than the higher amount of bitumen percentage than CRS1. It contains 60% of bitumen and seems to be darker in colour and much thicker in appearance than the other emulsions.

BITUMEN CUTBACK

Cutback Bitumen is dissolved in a solvent. Typical solvents include naphtha, gasoline, white spirit and kerosene etc…the type of solvent mixed controls the curing time while the amount determines the viscosity of the Cutback Bitumen. According to the curing time it can be divided into two such are Medium Curing and Rapid Curing. Cutback Bitumen is suitable for primer sealing and used as a prime coat of the base course prior to placing of the bituminous surface course also can be used in manufacturing of pre-mix asphalt which is used patch repairs. Here we produce Bitumen Cutback MC.30 and MC.70.

Bitumen Cutback MC.30 and MC.70.

Here we use heated bitumen and kerosene processed through a mixing plant in order to produce Bitumen Cutback and then supplied to our customers in bulk and drums after the quality tests. Both MC.30 and MC.70 are medium curing and the difference is the percentage of kerosene mixed and Viscosity. Special care must be taken whilst heating, as Cutback MC30 and MC70 contains flammable cutters which have a flash point of > 40°C.
